Book Summary: In 2004 Sanjaya Baru left a successful career as chief editor of the Financial Express to join Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as his media adviser in UPA 1. Singh offered him the job with the words, Sitting here, I know I will be isolated from the outside world. I want you to be my eyes and ears. Tell me what you think I should know, without fear or favour.

The Accidental Prime Minister is Barus account of what it was like to manage public opinion for Singh while giving us a riveting look at Indian politics as it happened behind the scenes. As Singhs spin doctor and trusted aide for four years, Baru observed up close Singhs often troubled relations with his ministers, his cautious equation with Sonia Gandhi and how he handled the big crises from managing the Left to pushing through the nuclear deal. In this book he tells all and draws for the first time a revelatory picture of what it was like for Singh to work in a government that had two centers of power.

Insightful, acute and packed with political gossip, The Accidental Prime Minister is one of the great insider accounts of Indian political life and a superb portrait of the Manmohan Singh era.

Author: Arvind Kejriwal

Summary Of The Book
In the year 2011, the Indian government was shaken by Anna Hazare, who lead an agitation, demanding the implementation of the Lokpal bill. Previously, discussions on politics used to remain only within the four walls of an individual’s house. However, this time things were different. Hazare’s agitation caused the middle class, and the elite to join hands in their fight against corruption.
Swaraj has a number of editorial cartoons that throw light on several crucial issues prevalent in the economic, political, and social scenario in India. The book starts off by providing a detailed analysis about the framing of government policies, which results in industrialists and politicians pocketing a great deal of money. He further explains the current political scenario in the country by throwing light on the difficulties faced by those who require help of government officials. He goes on to explain how government doctors don’t provide the medical assistance promised, and how the police often don’t register cases. Kejriwal also throws light on the problems faced by farmers, whose land is snatched away for a paltry sum of money, which will meet their needs for just few months.
He further explains the water crisis faced in many villages in the country, exclaiming that although many dams are full, yet water shortage is prevalent as water is only transferred to cities. He further throws light on irrelevant policies for villages, disregarding their actual need. Kejriwal insists that ‘mohalla gramsabhas’ should be established, where the needs of the people in that locality can be addressed by the people themselves. He further urges the citizens of the country to stand up against corruption. This is the Hindi edition of the book.

Summary:
The last one-and-a-half years in India have been defined by the anti-graft agitation led by Anna Hazare. His key lieutenant, Arvind Kejriwal, has played a central role in the movement.

In 2012, as it became clear that the political establishment was not going to accede to the main demand of the movement to pass the Lokpal Bill. Team Anna demanded the setting up of a Special Investigative Team to probe corrupt politicians. On 25 July 2012, Kejriwal, along with two of his colleagues and Anna Hazare, sat on a fast to press this demand.

This book, which serves as a manifesto for the movement going forward, gives practical suggestions as to what the ordinary citizen, the opinion makers and the political establishment in India can do to provide a political alternative, or to achieve true swaraj (self-rule).

The authors central point is that power must shift from New Delhi and the state capitals to the village councils and the town communities, so that people can be directly empowered to take decisions about their own lives. A must-read for anyone with a dream to leave behind a better India for the next generation.

Loosely based on his real life, 2 States: The Story Of My Marriage charts the love story between a Tamil Brahmin girl and a Punjabi boy who find their relationship jeopardized by this very ethnic disconnect.

Summary Of The Book:

Krish Malhotra meets Ananya Swaminathan at IIM Ahmedabad where they are both pursuing an M.B.A. Ananya’s charm and good looks bring her to the fore of the popularity chart at the Institute and although Krish finds her very appealing, this reputation makes him wary of her. Ananya enlists Krish’s help who is an IIT graduate and the duo began their friendship. Soon this friendship blossoms into love and the pair become inseparable. The real story begins in their last year at the Institute when having moved past all of the other person’s idiosyncrasies, the two are resolved to tie their love through the bond of marriage. However, they aren’t the only ones involved in this decision and although they are in love, there is the question of their families. With the parents not accepting their love, Ananya is sent off to meet Tamil Brahmin boys while Krish is sent off to meet respectable Punjabi girls. However, Krish cannot forget Ananya and is the same with her and he embarks on a quest to win over her family to finally marry her. Through a number of amusing and misfortunate clashes, the families disapprove of this union due to their cultural and ethnic differences. The magic that is Bhagat’s gift in storytelling is his use of humor and candor and he employs these devices to full use in this story where the North-South polarities provide generous comedic effect. Narrated from Krish’s point of view, a first person narrative, 2 States: The Story Of My Marriage is an infectiously lighthearted read that digs at the ethnic gap between Indian communities. The rights of the book have been sold to producer Nadiadwala who is adapting the warm tale for the big screen.
